What is Water Scarcity?
Water scarcity is a situation where there is not enough water to go around for everyone who needs it. It's like having a pizza that's not big enough to feed everyone at a party. When this happens with water, it can cause problems for people, animals, and plants that need water to survive.
Water scarcity happens when there are more people and animals using water than there is water available. It can also happen when the water that is available is polluted or not safe to drink. Climate change can also make water scarcity worse by causing droughts, which are long periods without rain.
Water scarcity can be a big problem because without enough water, people can get sick, crops can die, and animals can suffer. To solve water scarcity, people can try to use water more efficiently, such as taking shorter showers, fixing leaky faucets, and not watering the lawn during the hottest part of the day. Governments can also invest in water infrastructure, like dams and pipelines, to help make sure that people have enough water.

Draw a flow chart to show what water scarcity is, how it impacts on people and the environment and how we can improve access to water using the information above. Remember to add a Title for your flow chart, rule all straight lines and use colour.

What Factors Affect Water Availability?
- Altitude - As altitude increases rainfall also increases. Condensation occurs as air cools in higher altitudes. The air can no longer hold moisture and precipitation occurs. The precipitation is often in the form of snow.
- Distance from the Sea - Areas close to the sea will receive more rainfall than places further from the sea. This is due to high levels of evaporation over the ocean. As the air mass moves across the land it will drop this moisture.
- Climate Change - Climate models have shown that areas in the northern latitudes are likely to experience more rain, and areas closer to the equator and middle attitudes will receive less rain. Already, in the last 100 years rainfall patterns have changed.
- Topography - As discussed earlier, snow often falls on top of the mountains. However, topography can also affect precipitation on the lower parts of the mountains. On the windward side of the slope of the mountain precipitation occurs. On the leeward side, less occurs. This is known as the rain shadow effect.
