- How do people’s worldviews affect their attitudes to and use of environments?
- What are the causes and consequences of change in environments and how can this change be managed?
- Why is an understanding of environmental processes and interconnections essential for sustainable management of environments?

Case Study: Adani's Carmichael Mine.
It’s the most controversial mine under consideration in Australia right now. But what are the facts about Adani’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in Queensland? The company promised the mine would create 10,000 jobs. There’s been some conjecture over whether that’s correct, with some experts saying the figure is closer to 1,500 jobs. Adani itself doesn’t say all 10,000 jobs will be permanent or all mine-based, rather that the jobs would be created “through direct and indirect value creation”.

TASK
Create an 'Annotated Visual Display' (AVD) in which you present your findings of an investigation into the human-induced environmental changes associated with the proposed Carmichael mine development. You should focus on:
You will need to give some consideration on how you will organise your AVD. As a starting point, you might like to categorise your learning into the 4 spheres that make up an environment. These include the Atmosphere, Hydrosphere, Lithosphere and the Biosphere. You will also need to apply your knowledge of geographic processes when trying to establish just how much change, and what type, is to be expected as a result of the project, what that might look like and how far away from the mine changes are likely to impact on the environment. For example, erosion and fuel spills enter river systems and flow to the sea, entering the Great Barrier Reef. Be generous with visuals. A screen shot of the region might be a starting point. Your AVD can be electronic in form or hand drawn.

Gold Coast
Queensland's iconic Gold Coast beaches experienced severe erosion as a result of wild weather in early 2013. The liveability of beachside homes in the area is under threat. See the local council's attempts to shore up the coastline and hear some questions being asked about the best way to protect the landscape. Where does the responsibility for fixing the problem ultimately lie?
