Sustrainable Agricultural Strategies
Are we headed for food shortages in the future? Many scientists say that food production is becoming a critical issue and that Australia has a part to play in securing food for the world's future. As you watch this clip from 2013, find out how past strategies dealt with the food security issue, and learn about our plans for addressing it now and in the future.

The Biofuel Dilemma
Biofuel refers to fuel that has been produced from renewable resources, such as plants and vegetable oils, and treated municipal and industrial wastes.
Traditionally, the main forms of biofuel have been wood and charcoal. Almost 90 per cent of wood harvested in Africa and 40 per cent harvested in Asia is used for heating and cooking. Today, people are seeking more renewable energy sources and wanting to reduce CO2 emissions associated with deforestation, so there is greater demand for alternative energy sources. Consequently, the use of agricultural crops to produce biofuels is increasing. Ethanol (mostly used as a substitute for petrol) is extracted from crops such as corn, sugar cane and cassava. Biodiesel is derived from plantation crops such as palm oil, soya beans and jatropha.

...and here is the dilemma!

Did you know that diesel cars burn half of the palm oil consumed in Europe? This is fuelling deforestation and the killing of orangutans in South East Asia.

An Introduction in which you reword the question above.
A TEEL paragraph in which you outline the advantages of the production of Biofuels
A TEEL paragraph in which you outline the disadvantages of the production of Biofuels
An overarching statement as to whether we should continue farming for biofuels.

Debate
Over the next couple of lessons, we are going to have two debates.
The debate propositions are below.
Australia's biomes have the capacity to achieve sustainable food security in the future
Population growth must halve in order to achieve sustainable food security in the future.
You will have two periods in which to prepare for this debate.
The art of debating is a rigorous one. You will need to conduct research and take notes on information relevant to the debate proposition. You will either be on the affirmative team or the negative team and your arguments should support that perspective. To win the debate will require you to prove the proposition is either correct or incorrect through the use of evidence, examples, and data.
Each team will have four speakers and a team manager. Each speaker will get two minutes to present their case at the debate. At two minutes you will be asked to stop speaking and that will be the end of your speech. Within your two-minute time frame, you should allocate time to rebut your opposition's argument before beginning your own argument. Your rebuttal should be brief given your total time allocation is two minutes.
