Key Enquiry Questions
- How does a temperate estuary system function?
- How does land transition to ocean?
- How well are we managing our Coasts?
- What evidence can be identified to assess the success of existing management strategies?

Coastal Biophysical Processes
In the above example, we might ask ourselves why the shape of the beach changed as the timelapse played. Other questions we might ask include:
Once we become curious learners we often make observations and asked questions about how these events take place. Can you think of any other questions you might ask about this natural event?
With a particular focus on that last question above, how would you go about finding out if erosion, as seen in the above video, could occur at your local beach?
- Why were the houses built so close to the coast?
- What made the waves so large in this instance?
- What happened to all the sand that was protecting the houses?
- How often does the coastline get eroded like this?
- Could erosion like this occur at my local beach?
Once we become curious learners we often make observations and asked questions about how these events take place. Can you think of any other questions you might ask about this natural event?
With a particular focus on that last question above, how would you go about finding out if erosion, as seen in the above video, could occur at your local beach?
- Conduct some research to find out if this extreme type of erosion could occur at our local beaches. Ask yourself some of these questions to get more precise with your answer.
- Would erosion take place equally along the coastline?
- How far inland would it be possible for erosion to cause damage to our local infrastructure and housing? How could these changes impact on the shape of our local coastline?
- Are there any natural features that could reduce the impact of large waves on our coastline?
- How do you waves even form?
With the questions above in mind and those that you wrote down in your workbook, write down the types of primary sources that could aid you in an investigation into the possibility of significant erosion at your local beach. Explain how these geographic tools could be useful in investigating these issues.
Here are some examples of Primary Sources geographers often use to investigate issues just like this.
